Guidelines for Youth Participants on the usage of Slack

Introduction to Slack

  • What is Slack? Imagine a digital hangout where you can connect with fellow MYSTIC participants from all the partner countries: Portugal, Cyprus, Italy, Greece and Romania! Slack is our go-to space for chatting, sharing ideas, and collaborating on cool projects in real-time.

  • Why Use Slack for MYSTIC? Slack brings us together, no matter where we are. Whether you’re in Cyprus, Italy, Greece, Portugal or Romania, you can easily share your thoughts, work on projects or ideas, and learn from each other.

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Join Slack and Start Using It

  1. Create Your Account:

    • If you don’t already have a Slack account, you’ll be prompted to create one. Enter your name, email, and a password.

  2. Join the Workspace:

    • After signing up, you’ll automatically be added to the MYSTIC Project workspace.

2. Set Up Your Slack Profile

  1. Add a Profile Picture:

    • Click on your profile icon in the top right corner and upload a photo.

  2. Fill in Your Details:

    • Add your full name, role, and a short bio so others can get to know you.

  3. Set Your Status:

    • Use the status feature to let others know if you’re available, busy, or away.

3. Navigate Slack

  1. Explore the Sidebar:

    • The sidebar on the left lists all the channels and direct messages (DMs). Click on any channel to open it.

  2. Join Channels:

    • To join a new channel, click on “Channels” in the sidebar, browse or search for a channel, and click “Join”. Start your journey in #general and your language’s channel (e.g., #greek, #italian etc). You’ll also find spaces dedicated to specific topics and activities. Want to share your latest project idea? Let us know and we can create a channel for that!

  3. Switch Between Channels:

Simply click on the name of a channel in the sidebar to switch to it. Think of the sidebar as your map. Use it to explore different channels. Join channels that interest you, like #activities, #co-labs or #challenges, and start connecting with others.

4. Send Messages and Interact

  1. Post a Message:

Type your message in the text box at the bottom of the channel and press “Enter” to send. Be the first! Type it in the message box and hit send. Whether it’s a question, an idea, or just saying hi, your message matters!

  1. Reply to Threads:

    • To reply to a specific message, hover over it, click “Reply in thread,” and type your response.

  2. Use Emojis and Reactions:

    • Add a reaction to messages by hovering over the message and clicking the emoji icon. Choose an emoji that fits your reaction. Found something awesome? Show it with an emoji! Reactions are a fun way to express how you feel about a post.

5. Share Files and Collaborate

  1. Upload Files:

Want to share a cool video or a presentation? Just drag and drop it into the chat.

Easy peasy!

Drag and drop files directly into the message box or click the “+” icon to upload files from your computer.

  1. Collaborate in Real Time:

    • Work together on documents, share links, and discuss ideas directly within the relevant channels.

6. Customize Your Notifications

  1. Set Up Notifications:

    • Click on your profile picture, go to “Preferences,” and choose how and when you’d like to receive notifications.

  2. Mute Channels:

    • If a channel is too noisy, you can mute it by clicking on the channel name and selecting “Mute channel.”

Best Practices

  • Respectful Communication: Treat others how you want to be treated. Keep it positive and constructive, and remember, we’re all here to learn and grow together.

  • Timely Responses: Keep the conversation alive by replying promptly. Got an idea for a challenge? Don’t wait—jump right in!

  • Active Participation: Don’t just be a bystander—get involved! Share your ideas, ask questions, and join activities. For example, participate in a “Weekly Creative Challenge,” where you collaborate with others to solve a real-world problem in your community.
